What is AdBlue?

AdBlue is a diesel exhaust fluid designed to reduce harmful emissions from modern diesel engines. It’s used in vehicles fitted with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, which was introduced to help meet strict Euro 6 emissions regulation. AdBlue is not a fuel its an additive. It’s made from deionised water and a high purity urea solution (a very specific, clean formula). 

It has its own filler cap which is separate from the diesel cap. It works by injecting into the exhaust system to break down toxic nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water vapour. This results in a big reduction in pollutants coming out of the tailpipe and a cleaner more environmentally friendly diesel vehicle. Most vehicles will clearly warn you when AdBlue levels are getting low, if you ignore this warning then many vehicles will prevent the engine from starting. 

Which Vehicles Use Ad Blue? 

You’ll typically find Adblue used in diesel vehicles equipped with SCR systems, including 

• Modern Diesel cars and SUVs 
• Vans and commercial vehicles 
• Euro 6 diesel models produced from around 2015 onwards
