Do EVs Need MOTs?

Many drivers in the UK have switched over to an electric vehicle over the last few years. But you might be wondering whether EVs still need an MOT? Yes, just like any petrol or diesel car, an electric vehicle must have a yearly MOT once it’s over three years old, to make sure it’s safe and roadworthy under UK regulations.

But while electric cars do need an MOT, the test itself is slightly different. With no engine, no exhaust system, and no emissions, there are a few checks that simply don’t apply and some new ones that do.
So what is different about an electric MOT? And where can you get one done?

Electric Car MOT vs Petrol Car MOT: What’s the Difference?

Electric car MOTs follow the same legal safety standards as a regular MOT. But there are some key differences:

Emissions Test:
Electric vehicles don’t have an engine, meaning they don’t produce exhaust gases, so their MOT skips:

  • Emissions testing
  • Exhaust checks
  • Catalytic converter inspection

The rest of the test stays mostly the same, except for one important test.

Battery and High Voltage Tests:
Because EVs rely on powerful batteries and high‑voltage components, the MOT includes basic visual and safety checks to ensure:

  • The battery is secure
  • There are no leaks or obvious damage
  • Cables are free from tears and secure
  • The vehicle can power essential systems such as lights

These aren’t deep diagnostic tests, but they are essential for the safe operation of EV’s on the road.
